Alfredo J. Artiles, Distinguished Scholar on Disabilities, Equity, and Education, to Deliver 14th Annual Brown Lecture ASU Professor to Address Equity Problems Linked to Disparities in Disability Identification听
WHAT: The听14th Annual听Brown听Lecture in Education Research, held by the 熊猫视频. The title of this year鈥檚 lecture is 鈥淩e-envisioning Equity Research: Disability Identification Disparities as a Case in Point.鈥�
In his talk, Alfredo J. Artiles, a professor of special education and dean of graduate education at Arizona State University, will discuss longstanding challenges associated with conducting and using research in addressing complex equity problems. Dr. Artiles will examine these issues in the context of research on disability disparities that are historically linked to demographic markers such as race, social class, and gender. This is an equity problem since disability identification is associated with academic achievement gaps, increased school dropouts, differential job market opportunities, and reduced civic engagement. Dr. Artiles听will critique traditional studies on disability disparities听and outline guidelines for the next generation of equity research.
The听Brown听Lecture illuminates the important role of research in advancing understanding of equality and equity in education. The听Brown听Lecture was inaugurated by 熊猫视频in 2004 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the听Brown v. Board of Education听decision, in which the U.S. Supreme Court took scientific research into account in issuing its landmark ruling. Each year a leading scholar notable for producing significant research related to equality in education is invited to give this public lecture in Washington, D.C.

WHO: Artiles is the Ryan C. Harris Professor of Special Education and Dean of the Graduate College at Arizona State University (ASU), and directs the Equity Alliance at ASU. His scholarship aims to understand how disability intersections with race, language, gender, and social class both enhance and perpetuate the classification of educational opportunities. In 2011, Dr. Artiles was appointed by President Obama to the White House Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. He is an 熊猫视频Fellow and has received numerous 熊猫视频honors, including the 2012 Palmer O. Johnson Award and the 2017 Review of Research Award.
