In a jointly signed June 29 letter, ÐÜèÊÓÆµExecutive Director Felice J. Levine; Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; New York University professor Jonathan B. Freeman; and Laura E. Durso, executive director of the Whitman-Walker Institute, urged the National Science Foundation to include sexual orientation and gender identity measures in the 2021 National Survey of College Graduates and other future surveys conducted by NSF’s National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics. Read more

Building on the success of the first five courses, with substantial turnouts ranging from nearly 200 to close to 700 registrants per course, the ÐÜèÊÓÆµVirtual Research Learning Series resumes in August with the last four courses. Read more

ÐÜèÊÓÆµEndorses Research Investment to Spark the Economy (RISE) Act
On June 24, a bipartisan group of six House members introduced the Research Investment to Spark the Economy Act (H.R. 7308). The RISE Act would provide supplemental funding for federal research agencies which have experienced disruptions in research activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Read more

Senate Confirms Sethuraman Panchanathan as Next NSF Director
On June 18, the Senate voted under unanimous consent to confirm Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan as the next director of the National Science Foundation. Read more

Trump Administration Issues Executive Order Suspending Certain Work Visas
On June 22, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that suspends certain work visas for skilled foreign workers through December 31. Read more

NSF SBE Advisory Committee Meeting Focuses on Covid-19 Response, CISE Collaboration
On June 4, the National Science Foundation Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Advisory Committee met virtually for updates on the current and future work of the SBE Directorate. Read more

Senate and House Committees Hold Hearings on Reopening Schools and Colleges Safely
Key Senate and House education committees held hearings in June focused on the impact of Covid-19 on U.S. schools and colleges and plans for re-opening them in the fall. Read more

Draft 2025 NAEP Reading Assessment Framework Available for Public Comment—Deadline: July 23
The National Assessment Governing Board is accepting public comments on the draft 2025 NAEP Reading Assessment Framework. This is the first comprehensive update of the framework since 2004. Comments are due July 23. Read more

The purpose of this special topic, launched in response to the current pandemic crisis, will be to learn and share as many lessons as possible, so that we are better prepared for systemic shocks in the future.

In Memoriam

ÐÜèÊÓÆµmembers who have recently passed away

Stephen Davidoff, CEO of Stephen H. Davidoff and Associates and former director of research and evaluation of the School District of Philadelphia, died on June 2. He was a member for Division H: Research, Evaluation and Assessment in Schools. 

Terry A. Astuto, Professor Emerita of Educational Leadership at New York University, died on May 10. She was a member of Division A: Administration, Organization and Leadership, Division K: Teaching and Teacher Education, and Division L: Educational Policy and Politics.

James R. Bliss, former associate professor and chair of the department of educational leadership and policy studies at Eastern Kentucky University, died on February 8. He was a member of Division A: Administration, Organization, and Leadership.
