New Awards Luncheon to Honor Awardees at Annual Meeting
February 2013
The
2013 Annual Meeting
in San Francisco will feature a new èƵAwards Luncheon dedicated to recognizing excellence in education research. In June 2012, èƵCouncil decided to introduce the luncheon to honor awardees and to visibly acknowledge AERA’s commitment to significant accomplishments related to education research.
“The Awards Luncheon is an opportunity to celebrate the field,” said Felice Levine, executive director. “The luncheon ceremony will focus on the 14 AERA-wide awards and special citations. There is no cost for attending; we hope for a large turnout of the community for this first-ever event.”
The current èƵAwards Program was inaugurated in 1963 and, like the Association itself, has grown substantially in the intervening years, so that there are now 14 Association-wide awards, along with 48 at the division level and 126 from 77 special interest groups. Through these awards, èƵrecognizes and encourages excellence among emerging scholars and experienced researchers. The awards feature outstanding books and articles and spotlight research that reaches education practitioners or a wider public audience. Some awards focus on the cumulative impact of a lifetime of scholarship on education.
The Awards Luncheon will take place on Day 3 of the Annual Meeting (Monday, April 29) from 12:25 to 2:25 p.m., with President William Tierney presiding. Those wishing to attend can purchase lunch in advance on the registration form, or they can attend free of charge by bringing their own lunch or joining in for complimentary coffee or ice tea. Attendees ordering lunch need to preregister ($35 for regular members, $20 for student members) as part of their online
Annual Meeting registration
. èƵis substantially underwriting the cost of the paid lunches to encourage participation.
The Presidential Address will also take place, as usual, on Day 3 of the Annual Meeting (Monday, April 29), from 4:35 to 5:50 p.m. It will be followed by a champagne reception from 5:50 to 6:20 p.m.
