ÐÜèÊÓƵReleases New Book, Research on Schools, Neighborhoods, and Communities
February 2012
This month, ÐÜèÊÓƵreleases the book
Research on Schools, Neighborhoods, and Communities: Toward Civic Responsibility,
edited by William F. Tate IV. With five parts and 25 chapters, this volume brings together 48 experts who focus on linking research and civic responsibility.
Tate developed the book as an outgrowth of Presidential sessions at the 2008 ÐÜèÊÓƵAnnual Meeting. It focuses on research and theoretical developments related to the role of geography and, in particular, the unequal opportunities that result from geography in education, human development, and health. The research presented in this volume provides historical, moral, and scientifically based arguments with the potential to inform understandings of civic problems associated with education, youth, and families, and to guide the actions of responsible citizens and institutions dedicated to advancing the public good.
William F. Tate IV is the Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. His research interests include the application of geospatial and epidemiological models to problems in education, human development, and health. Tate served as ÐÜèÊÓƵpresident for 2007–2008.
A session at the 2012 ÐÜèÊÓƵAnnual Meeting will examine this new volume and will feature comments by the editor and by field experts, including Gary Orfield (University of California, Los Angeles). The session will take place on Monday, April 16, from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
The book is published under the auspices of the ÐÜèÊÓƵBooks Editorial Board, which has responsibility for book products emanating from ÐÜèÊÓƵactivities, journals, projects, or programs. “This volume is an important resource for educators and policy makers,” noted Board chair Cherry McGee Banks. “William Tate and a renowned group of educators provide important insights and recommendations on the role of geography in education, human development, and health. This compelling volume will inform readers’ understandings of civic problems and possible solutions for them.”
