On March 22, nearly 100 congressional staff, federal employees, and members of the research community attended a congressional briefing—“In the Age of Inequality, Does Public Schooling Make a Difference?”—cohosted by 熊猫视频and the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS). On March 26, the Commerce Department announced that the 2020 U.S. Census will include a question on the citizenship status of those being counted. The announcement was quickly condemned by the research community. Read more
Final FY 2018 Appropriations Bill Includes Additional Spending for Research Agencies
Congress passed an omnibus appropriations bill to fund the government for Fiscal Year 2018, and President Donald Trump signed it into law on March 23. The legislation reflects the increase in the budget caps for FY 2018 and 2019 included in the previous continuing resolution. Read more
NSF’s EHR Issues Guidance on Data Management Plans to Support Data Sharing in Education Research
The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced on March 6 that the Education and Human Resources Directorate (EHR) had issued new guidance for grant applicants for including data management plans in their proposals. The guidance is intended to support research transparency and data sharing in education research. Read more
Friends of IES Holds Capitol Hill Briefing on Advances in Educating Underprepared College Students
On February 26, the Friends of IES coalition hosted a briefing, “Advances in Educating Underprepared College Students: Knowledge, Policy and Practice.” The briefing presented research and partnerships that have shown positive effects in helping students who arrive at community colleges underprepared to complete courses and persist. 熊猫视频sponsored four graduate student members who participated in the 5th annual Catalyzing Advocacy for Science and Engineering (CASE) Workshop in Washington, D.C., March 18–21. The workshop presents an opportunity for students in scientific disciplines to learn about science policy and advocacy. Read more

Six new projects have received 熊猫视频Education Research Service Project (ERSP) awards. The ERSP program provides small grants ($1,000 to $5,000) to education researchers who offer their expertise on a pro bono basis to educational organizations, institutions, or community groups that can benefit from and express a need for their knowledge and skills.
