Lesson Note

LessonNote 5 is here to support Lesson Study!

In 2012, Lesson Study Alliance released LessonNote, a unique and powerful iPad application for documenting student activity and learning during a lesson. Now, Version 5 has just been released, and it's great!

The user experience is centered on a customizable seating chart: tapping on a student (or anything else) opens a notepad where you can jot notes and insert photos of student work-in-progress. It looks like this:

When you review your notes later, it looks like this:

Unknown-1

Every note shows who it is about and is time-stamped, so you know who did what, when. The timeline on the right side shows the overall structure of the lesson, with orange for teacher-directed whole class time, green for independent student work time, and blue for group work time.

LessonNote is free for up to 5 lessons per year (≤ typical lesson study usage), and lessons with < 15 notes don't count. So download it now, try it out, and let us know what you think!

èƵ2026: Lesson Study in LA

AERA-LA-2026

On Thursday, April 9, 2026, we visited Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School in the South Los Angeles area for an open lesson in a 3rdgrade math class. During the “Going Green” lesson, students showed various problem-solving strategies, collaborative interactions, and argumentation skills. Thanks tothe California Action Network for Mathematics Excellence and Equity()Ի Kyndall Brown’s leadership for this amazing opportunity. Special thanks to Susie Håkansson and Brent Jackson for their outstanding efforts organizing this event. We deeply appreciate the lesson study team who made it possible for 27 people to observe math thinking in action and learn from students. We are happy that members of the SIG-RME joined us in this event and we hope that this is the beginning of future collaborative events. We sent math stickers to the students who participated in the lesson on our behalf.
