In the April issue of ÐÜèÊÓÆµHighlights, ÐÜèÊÓÆµannounced that members would soon have the option to select from an expanded list of gender identity categories when renewing their membership or joining the association. After release of the April issue, I received some very thoughtful comments, especially from scholars in AERA’s Queer Studies SIG, directed to further altering the choices to better reflect the association’s goals and intent.  

 
 
The theme of the 2017 Annual Meeting—“Knowledge to Action—Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity”—is a call to examine critical dimensions of educational opportunity and rigor in research as they pertain to the diversity of issues, populations, and contexts served in and by educational inquiry. The Call for Submissions will be released June 1; deadline for submissions: July 22.
 

More than 30 ÐÜèÊÓÆµmembers from the San Antonio region joined ÐÜèÊÓÆµPresident Vivian L. Gadsden, ÐÜèÊÓÆµExecutive Director Felice J. Levine, and 2017 Annual Meeting Co-chairs Angela E. Arzubiaga and James Earl Davis to discuss the 2017 Annual Meeting.
 

The ÐÜèÊÓÆµGrants Program held its annual ÐÜèÊÓÆµInstitute on Statistical Analysis for Education Policy, on May 10–13 in Washington, D.C.

The House of Representatives and Senate Appropriations Committees have now passed Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies appropriations bills, which include funding for the National Science Foundation.
 
 
The Committee for Education Funding (CEF) held a Presidential Forum on May 26, where representatives from the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders presidential campaigns spoke about their candidates’ education platforms.
 

At the end of March, President Barack Obama signed into law the Evidence-Based Policy Commission Act. The House of Representatives initially passed the bill in 2015, and the Senate advanced the bill under unanimous consent in March.
