Richard Shavelson Margaret Jacks Professor of Education (Emeritus) Stanford University ÐÜèÊÓƵPast President / Member of Division D - Measurement & Research Methodology
ÐÜèÊÓƵfostered my growth as a scholar and researcher. At the beginning of my career I had colleagues at the Annual Meeting who gave critical feedback, put me in touch with others from whom I could learn, and provided friendly support. Later in my career, the organization gave me leadership responsibilities on various committees and ultimately I served as ÐÜèÊÓƵPresident (at a time when federal government education leaders were calling us pointy headed intellectuals!). Perhaps the greatest opportunity for me to give back to ÐÜèÊÓƵwas the creation of the Research Grants Board. This I did during my presidency, in collaboration with Emerson Elliot at the then National Center for Education Statistics and subsequently with Bill Schmidt then at National Science Foundation. The Grants Program is now about 35 years old and going strong, funding graduate students and scholars to carry out policy related research on large-scale federal data sets.
