熊猫视频President Vivian L. Gadsden will give the 2017 Presidential Address, which will be centered around "The Promise of Education Research and the Public Trust."

Following the address, Gadsden will pass the proverbial torch to 熊猫视频President-Elect Deborah Loewenberg Ball who will begin her term at the conclusion of the conference.

A celebratory champagne reception will follow the address.

The “new immigration” has coincided with an era of widening inequality, diminishing opportunity and growing gaps in the educational attainments of children raised in rich and poor families. Immigrants and their children today comprise about a quarter of the U.S. population, transforming its ethnic diversity. Both the most educated and the least educated groups in the U.S. today are immigrants; what happens to their offspring remains a puzzle for educational research. This lecture will trace the story of the education and social mobility of a unique panel of 1.5- and second-generation respondents followed from 1991 (when they were in middle school at mean age 14) to 2015 (in their late 30s).

This year’s Early Career Award Lecture will be given by Christopher Emdin (Teachers College, Columbia University) and will focus on the paper “Reprisal and Revival in an Age of Denial: Pentecostal Hip-hop Pedagogies in the Key of Life.”

Education, Democracy, and Citizen Justice

What do we understand to be the salient issues associated with democracy and education as these relate to justice for individuals and institutions in contemporary society? How do we negotiate differences in attitudes, beliefs, and practices; conceptualize and act on them in relation to our roles in a democracy; engage the broader domains of disagreement; and respond to the human experience and condition? How do we attempt to resolve tensions between citizenship, human rights, and an ever-increasing globalized world? What is the schooling and what are public discourses needed to promote democratic education? Participants for this session include Prudence L. Carter (University of California - Berkeley), John S. Rogers (University of California - Los Angeles), Gloria J. Ladson-Billings (University of Wisconsin - Madison), and Marc Lamont Hill (Morehouse College).

From Disparities to Social Determinants: Toward a Culture of Education and Health Equity

This session will focus on the role of health and educational equity in enhancing opportunity, reducing disparities, and understanding the role of social determinants in both. Drawing upon the National Academy of Medicine’s recent study Community-Based Solutions to Promote Health Equity in the United States and research on educational disparities, participants will examine cross-cutting policy issues as they are framed and implemented across education and health and the implications for efforts advancing social justice. Session participants include Thomas LaVeist (The George Washington University), Roslyn Arlin Mickelson (University of North Carolina – Charlotte), and Kent McGuire (Southern Education Foundation, Inc.).

Communicating Science Effectively: A Research Agenda and Science Literacy: Concepts, Contexts, and Consequences - Two Recent Academies Reports
