Gender, race, and class and the new dimensions of stratification in higher education
FINAL REPORT: Sorting young scientists: Social inequality and access to scientific, mathematical and technical fields in American colleges and universities
In the past, access to higher education was limited for women, minorities and students from lower socio-economic backgrounds. However, with the expansion of the college system, stratification now occurs in obtaining access at the most selective and prestigious institutions and earning degrees in the fields which carry the highest status and ecomonic payoffs. This study examines how opportunities to receive degree in math and science fields at selective institutions vary by gender, race and social class background.
