Why teachers stay: A comprehensive, multivariate analysis of factors influencing the retention of teachers
FINAL REPORT:
This study addresses the issue of retaining teachers at a time when student enrollment and the need for new teachers is increasing. The study proposes a comprehensive, multivariate analysis of factors that affect the decision made by teachers to account the influence that the support a teacher receives and the match between training and teaching assignments have on this decision.
Data will come from SASS 1987-88 and 1988-1989. The OLS Least Squares Regression module in the SPSS Program and a multivariate probit technique will be used to estimate a comprehensive model of teacher retention behavior. The results from this study will have implications for educational policy developed to retain qualified and experienced teachers at various points in their career.
