Teenage childbearing and high school dropouts: The role of school experiences

FINAL REPORT:

The relation between the antecedents of becoming an adolescent childbearer and a high school dropout were investigated, focusing on the context of schooling. Data was drawn from two longitudinal cohorts of students participating in the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS:88). The context of schooling measure tested in the model included a range of educational experiences adolescents have in school and at home. The context of schooling proved to be a significant predictor of adolescents' fertility and dropout behavior. The results are discussed in terms of the meaning of negative school experiences in adolescent development.
